Arrangements and Appeals
JOHN CABOT ACADEMY ADMISSIONS ARRANGEMENTS 2013
- We are holding two Open Evenings (open house, no appointments required) on Thursday 13 September 2012 and Thursday 20 September 2012, from 5.00pm to 8.00pm.
- The Local Authority common application form must be completed and returned to your home Local Authority.
- All applicants should attend John Cabot Academy for two assessments. The first to test a child’s academic ability and the second, an oral assessment, to determine a child’s level of technological aptitude.
- The academic test will be a standardised non-verbal reasoning test specifically constructed by Granada Learning, an independent provider of educational assessments.
- The oral assessment will be undertaken on a one-to-one basis to determine 10% of the 160 places which will be offered on technological aptitude.
- All applicants will take both tests on one day which is scheduled for Thursday 13 December. If you have not received an appointment by 1 December, please contact the Admissions Officer at the Academy.
- Where a child has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day to day activities, and this requires specific admission to John Cabot Academy, i.e. no other school can accommodate the child’s needs, we will require written supporting evidence from a relevant professional, e.g. Doctor or Specialist, which must be sent at the time of the application. Copies should be sent direct to John Cabot Academy.
Examples of physical/mental impairment that may require entry to a specific school include:
mobility or co-ordination problems;
speech, hearing or eyesight impairment; or progressive conditions e.g. cancer, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy; or recognised mental illness. - To be classed as a sibling an applicant must have a sibling who currently attends John Cabot Academy in Years 7 to 11. In order for a Year 12 age student at Post 16 within the Cabot Learning Federation (CLF) to be classed as a sibling they must have completed KS4 at John Cabot Academy and continue to attend the CLF on the date of admission of the applicant.
- All test results and procedures for the allocation of places are open to inspection by HMI, OfSTED and the DfE. The random selection is also witnessed by independent auditors.
Any applicant who is absent for the assessments and who does not notify John Cabot Academy of the circumstances of absence on the day of the test or within 2 working days, will be deemed to have withdrawn from the admissions process.
All applicants who complete the process and are not offered a place at John Cabot Academy (or a higher preference), have the option to be placed on a waiting list.
Late applications will not be considered until all first round offers have been made.
Applications received by the LA after the closing date will be treated as ‘late applications’ whatever the reason for such late application and will, unless there are very exceptional circumstances, not be considered with the on time applications. If places become available after the first round of allocated places, late applications will be considered in accordance with the over subscription criteria along with applications on the waiting list.
APPEALS PROCEDURE
If you complete the admissions process and your child is not offered a place at John Cabot Academy, you normally have the right to appeal to an independent panel. This part of the process will be organised on behalf of John Cabot Academy by South Gloucestershire Council Democratic Services. You will receive further information regarding this process when offers are sent out.
