Comic Relief 2011
Written by Sam Crew on 21/03/2011 – 11:31 am -Comic Relief fundraising was in full swing at the Academy last week with staff and students taking part in a range of activities to raise money for this worthy cause. Each tutor group, including staff, was invited to wear fancy dress for the day; each tutor group decided its theme and the best dressed and the group that raised the most money won a prize. Each student paid £1 to take part or they raised money by sponsorship.
As well as a sponsored silence, students also took part in events such as ‘So You Think Cabot Can Dance’ (which took place on Tuesday 15 March ahead of Comic Relief day). There were 15 acts who competed and the winner was decided on the day. Students paid a £1.50 entrance fee to raise further money. Soak the Teacher, took place on Friday 18 March, where students had the opportunity to throw wet sponges at several members of staff. Staff and students were also in direct competition in a staff versus the sixth form sports event. Teams from the staff and the sixth form competed in Volleyball, Netball and Basketball after school.
Even John Cabot’s caterers got involved. Sodexo, who run the Academy canteen, put on a themed American diner day with staff dressing up in Grease style fancy dress. They also sold Comic Relief cakes with proceeds from the sale going towards the fundraising. And finally, Red Noses! All staff and students were encouraged to wear one throughout the day.
Sarah Church, Learning Coordinator and PE/Dance Teacher, who organised the day’s events said, “The students really enjoyed dressing up and taking part in the activities. There was a lot of friendly rivalry as to which tutor group was best dressed but what this event allowed us to address is some of the serious issues around Comic Relief, and the worthwhile causes they support both here in the UK and Africa.”
