Fixed term contract 2012-2013 Academic Year

We require a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward-thinking full-time Teacher of ICT & Computing to join our highly successful and innovative department teaching a mixture of ICT and Computing to all Key Stages from September 2012. The department has been growing from strength to strength over the past few years and are looking forward to appointing an inspiring, innovative and creative individual to work with the department into the next phase.

You will become part of a well-established team working to implement changes to the core ICT curriculum in an innovative and student focussed manner. Skills in Programming, Digital Media and creating interactive lesson materials would be an advantage.

ICT is a core subject in KS3 where students study a mixture of ICT and Computing skills. OCR Nationals Level 2 and the GCSE Computing are popular option choices in years 10 and 11. In Key Stage 5, both OCR Nationals Level 3 and Computing are offered to a large Post 16 cohort with strong numbers choosing to develop their understanding of ICT at the Academy.

The ICT & Computing Department provides a range of exciting extra-curricular activities, such as the popular iOS programming club, Flash club and Photoshop club. We also support eLearning evangelism around the academy, to inspire teachers in other subject areas to utilise effective ICT in their pedagogy. We aim to be on the very cutting edge of innovation and technology.

We welcome applications from someone who aspires to:

work in a highly supportive, friendly and well resourced ICT & Computing Department.

work in a team where standards and expectations are Outstanding both within the department and across the Academy.

be part of an innovative team that will shape the next stage of the development of the ICT & Computing Faculty and the Academy.

Applicants will be asked to submit a short video (no more than three minutes) demonstrating how they satisfy the skills criteria specified for this exciting opportunity, links to finished videos can be submitted to www.cabot.ac.uk/videoapp For further details, contact Human Resources on 0117 9763000 ext 1198, 1196, 1199 or email: hr@clf.cabot.ac.uk

Closing date for all applications is noon on Wednesday 7 March 2012

Interviews will be held on Monday 19 March 2012

The Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to a CRB check

ICT & Computing – A Faculty Overview

The ICT & Computing Department at John Cabot Academy offers a variety of Computing opportunities throughout the whole age range.

In KS3 students are taught in mixed ability groups and get two periods of ICT a week. The emphasis is on a four-part strategy that addresses functional ICT skills, the National Curriculum, Digital Media and Computer Science. We strongly believe in student led and skills based learning, all students will study the same themes but large areas are student driven.

We endeavour to link our teaching with those of other faculties to give the students continuity across their learning experience within the academy. This is consistent with the Personal Learning and Thinking Skills that students aspire to develop during their time with us. In Year 9 ICT remains a core subject but students have the opportunity to begin a course that will lead to a qualification at the end of Year 10 as part of the early option programme and many will choose to do this.

At KS4 students can choose a pathway within the faculty. They can opt for the Developer Pathway by choosing Computing GCSE, or the User Pathway by choosing the OCR Nationals Level 2. Both courses are consistently popular choices with students and our Computing GCSE option is growing rapidly.

At KS5 students can continue down the User or Developer Pathway by following OCR Nationals Level 3 or OCR Computing to A2. These subjects remain popular at KS5 and some students even select both!

Tracking, monitoring and target setting are extremely important for all of our students to ensure they understand their current levels of achievement whilst also knowing the steps they have to take personally to improve personal success albeit at National Curriculum Level, GCSE grade or AS/A2 Grade.

Extended Day Activities:

All members of the Faculty offer an Extended Day activity to further enrich the learning experience of all Cabot students; this can be an academic club or an additional enrichment activity. Recent department clubs include iOS programming, Photoshop, Flash, Computer Hardware and Coursework catch-up.

Platforms:

We have a wide range of technology interests in the faculty, making us very keen to develop students’ awareness and understanding of alternative computing platforms. Whilst we use Windows based computing suites, we are committed to teaching students transferable skills and knowledge rather than the usage of a specific piece of software.

General:

We have a very hard working staff committed to aiming for the best for all our students. The Department works together as a team with everyone involved in decision making. We are constantly reviewing both our curriculum and our teaching strategies so that we are never standing still and we are always looking at new and innovative methods. We are rewarded with students who enjoy their lessons and who aim for and achieve high standards.

Person Specification for the Post

It is likely that the person appointed will meet most, if not all, of the following criteria:

Experience

The post is equally suited to an experienced teacher with a proven track record as well as a talented and enthusiastic newly qualified teacher.

Qualifications

A degree in Computer Science, Computing or ICT

A PGCE or B.Ed (or equivalent qualifications)

Special Abilities and Aptitudes

We hope to appoint someone who:

is energetic, creative, innovative and committed professionally

has an eye for where ICT & Computing is developing and be able to contribute to the curriculum accordingly

maintains an interest in current technology and a passion for sharing this with students in interesting ways

will motivate our students and stimulate their interest in ICT & Computing

has good organisational abilities consistent with the role of planning and leading innovative lessons

possesses a knowledge of programming and a willingness to learn and teach a variety of languages

will ensure progress and improvement for all our students

can maintain a sense of humour whilst working under pressure

will have the willingness to work as part of a team.

The Teacher of ICT & Computing role is a demanding but enjoyable one; staff joining us at John Cabot Academy will find themselves in a rewarding and inspiring environment.

A Faculty Overview

The Modern Foreign Languages Faculty at John Cabot offers three Languages to all of its students– French, German and Spanish. In addition, students can pick Italian ab-initio at GCSE. MFL at John Cabot is exciting, motivating and fun for all of its students. We aim to be at the forefront with the use of IT which supports independent learning and fosters international links and promotes virtual and physical exchanges with a number of schools globally. In recent years we have focused on developing Key Stage 3 in line with the new National Curriculum requirements. The Key Stage 3 programme, introduced five years ago, allows students to experience all three Languages whilst also incorporating cultural and global aspects of the languages studied. After these experiences all students choose the Language they wish to continue learning in Year 8 then in Year 9 students work towards developing the necessary range of skills required to achieve success in KS4. At KS4 Languages are optional and we are achieving over 50 % take up every year, and with the recent emphasis on the EBAC we anticipate a 79% take up next academic year, which is well above the National Targets: students follow the Linear AQA French, Spanish and Italian courses orOCRfor German. At KS5 students study AQA Spanish.
