Vertical Tutoring
John Cabot Academy has trialed and now fully implemented vertical tutoring across the school. This course will provide the opportunity to learn more about the strategies required to implement vertical tutoring and the value it can provide to both staff and students.
Assessment for Learning
Assessment for Learning (AFL represents the corner stone of teaching and learning. At John Cabot Academy, AFL forms part our ‘Effective Lesson Framework’ and is supported by online resource and examples of outstanding practice. This course will provide the opportunity to discuss the best examples of AFL and strategies to develop it for use across all Key Stages.
Extending learning beyond the class room
Learning does not only happen in a classroom. How can we encourage Key Stage 3 students to practice subject areas at home? How do we develop an ethos of Year 11 and Sixth Form students using their time effectively out of lessons? On this course we will examine different approaches to homework and self-study, with the intention of sharing and developing new effective strategies.
Curriculum planning
The challenge of planning a curriculum that offers a personalised route for all students, whilst embracing a changing educational climate is enormous. John Cabot has embraced aspects of vocational learning alongside the more traditional GCSE provision. On this course we will discuss strategies to incorporate aspects such as Functional Skills, PLTs, Foundation Learning and Vertical Learning.
PLTs
“Students then make progress not only in their academic learning but also in their personal skills and competencies. Enabling this to happen requires a good deal of skill in planning and organising lessons, and a good knowledge of students’ particular needs.” OFSTED 2009.
John Cabot Academy is currently building on its expertise of delivering the competencies in Year 7, to a strategy of embedding the PLTs across the whole school. This course will examine our developments so far and aid in planning the integration of PLTs into all aspects of the curriculum.
Good to Outstanding
Our core business is teaching and learning and the experience students gain in the classroom. This course will examine the difference between a ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’ lesson and the key ingredients a lesson requires to meet this standard. The course will also provide the opportunity to look at departments and the school as a whole, in respect to the continual improvement of standards.
Coaching and CPD
The ethos of improving a member of staff’s strategies for teaching and learning are interlinked with effective coaching and an engaging, innovative model of CPD. At John Cabot Academy we have set up, evaluated and updated a sustainable model of coaching for all teachers. We are also having a new CPD model that links directly to performance management and incorporates Masters Accreditation. This course will look at the strategies and rationale for coaching and improving CPD across a school.
Delivering PSHE and the ECM agenda
“Students’ understanding of healthy lifestyles and how to keep safe are excellent.” OFSTED 2009.
PSHE at John Cabot is delivered through our `Learning for Life’ programme and this sits alongside our new approach to supporting the ECM agenda, through an innovative range of tutor time activities. This course will be an opportunity to see how John Cabot has developed these resources and provide the opportunity to share good practice.
Creative Learning Spaces
This course will provide you with the opportunity to visit a range of new, innovative and ultimately very successful learning environment. We will discuss the design, rationale and implications to teaching and learning, of these creative spaces. The course will provide an opportunity to share good practice and to spark the imagination, regarding being creative with space.
Inclusive Learning
John Cabot Academy gained Inclusion Status, in 2008 and the Inclusion Team has developed an innovative and supporting environment and ethos, around the issue of inclusion. This course will look at how individual teachers or a whole department can support and challenge all students more fully.
